The thickness comes from layered mat board which gives them a solid substantial feel. They are very light on your ears and can be worn comfortably all day.
The back is flat black. I used red core mat board so the sides are red with a black stripe.
The earrings measure approximately 1.25 (3.18 cm) x 1.75 (4.5 cm) inches with out wires. They are about 1/8 inch thick. The wires are sandwiched between the mat boards.
